The music thing was just random. If you've seen Stanley Lombardo perform parts of the Iliad or Odyssey with his drum, that's how most people believe these poems were read in public, which she ignored. Plus, the music idea was such a complete nonsequitur in the train of thought we thought she was following. At first,she was pointing out discrepancies in word choice in similar passages (i.e. the narrator gives an account of something, and later different characters give the same account of something in slightly different wording). This aspect was interesting, and she could have concluded a lot of interesting things about the characters themselves, but she somehow concluded that because of the discrepancies in word choice, the hymn had been set to music, with absolutely no other supporting evidence. She also completely ignored aspects of meter and oral tradition which also would have explained the change in word choice.
Whew, long, boring, classical explanation, but I hope it shed some light on my indignation! Hope Pythagoras is thriving!
